Marine collagen for the skin
Collagen is present in all tissues of the body, and its concentration is highest in the skin, where it provides support and firmness.
However, with advancing age and ageing, the amount of collagen present in the body and tissues gradually decreases, by around 1.5% from the age of 25 (i.e. approximately 1/3 less collagen at the age of 45).
This leads to a loss of moisture and thinning of the skin, which is damaging as it becomes more fragile, drier, less elastic and prone to the appearance of the first wrinkles. The skin also loses its role as a protective barrier against external aggressions such as the sun and UV rays, cold, wind, etc., causing it to age even faster.
In this article, we will discover the benefits of marine collagen, particularly for the skin.
Marine collagen, an effective anti-ageing agent
Type 1 collagen is the most abundant form of collagen in our skin, and levels are rapidly depleted due to intrinsic and extrinsic ageing processes.
Providing the body with a nutritional source of bioavailable type 1 collagen will replenish collagen reserves in the dermis and help strengthen the skin’s natural balance.
This is where marine collagen, extracted from marine resources using a complex and innovative process, plays a major role. Available in the form of hydrolysed peptides that are easily absorbed and penetrate the tissues, its anti-ageing effect is well established.
It helps to strengthen, repair and support the skin’s natural regeneration process by stimulating endogenous synthesis, i.e. by our own bodies. (Find out more: What is marine collagen?)
It is therefore easy to understand that an external, additional supply of collagen will help to strengthen our skin and prevent accelerated ageing.
It is available in cosmetic creams, in capsules in food supplements, sometimes combined with hyaluronic acid.
But it has also recently become available as a neutral-tasting powdered ingredient that can be easily added to everyday drinks, dishes or food preparations.
Studies conducted with a daily supplement of 10 g of marine collagen peptides have shown, for example:
- a significant improvement in skin hydration (23%),
- increased elasticity (24%)
- and a significant reduction in wrinkles (-9%).
In addition to a healthy diet (see Foods rich in collagen), these studies were conducted over a period of 3 months, with visible results after 1.5 months.
Other studies have shown that collagen supplementation reduces cellulite, promotes healthier nail and hair growth (see marine collagen for hair) and reduces joint pain (see marine collagen for joints).
In short, it has positive effects on skin health and prolonged youthfulness.
